अध्याय १: अर्जुनविषादयोग

ज्ञानेश्वरीचा आरंभ श्रीगणेशाला नमन करून होतो. संत ज्ञानेश्वरांनी गणेशाला विश्वाचे मूळ आणि सर्व वाङ्मयाचा स्रोत मानले आहे. त्यानंतर ते देवी सरस्वतीला वंदन करतात. या अध्यायात, संजय धृतराष्ट्राला कुरुक्षेत्रावरील युद्धाची माहिती देतो. तो दोन्ही बाजूंच्या सैन्यांचे आणि योद्ध्यांचे वर्णन करतो. पांडवांच्या सैन्यात उत्साह असतो, तर कौरवांच्या मनात शंका असते.

The Dnyaneshwari begins with a salutation to Shri Ganesha. Sant Dnyaneshwar considers Ganesha the origin of the universe and the source of all literature. He then pays homage to Goddess Saraswati. In this chapter, Sanjaya describes the battle scene at Kurukshetra to Dhritarashtra. He details the armies and warriors on both sides. The Pandava army is filled with enthusiasm, while the Kauravas have doubts in their minds.

Shri Krishna positioned Arjuna's chariot in the middle of both armies. When Arjuna saw his own grandfathers, teachers, uncles, brothers, and other relatives in both armies, his heart melted with compassion. His body began to tremble, his mouth went dry, and his Gandiva bow slipped from his hands. He sat down in the chariot and told Shri Krishna, 'The kingdom I will gain by killing all these people will be stained with blood, and I do not want it.' He expresses concern about the consequences of the war, such as the destruction of the lineage and the increase of sin.
